Introduction to La Michoacana Meat Market
La Michoacana Meat Market was founded in February 1986 by Mr. Rafael Ortega. Mr. Ortega, a Mexican immigrant came to this country with nothing but determination to succeed. He opened his first La Michoacana Meat Market in Houston, Texas with the long-term vision to provide quality groceries to Hispanic American households. Since that time several other La Michoacana Meat Markets have opened and are providing families with the nostalgia of many traditional meat cuts and vegetables found in Mexico and Latin America. Mr. Ortega continues to actively serve on the Board of Directors, along with his children who continue to grow and expand the company.
With the support from all the family, they made sure the business kept growing, creating jobs, services, values and products never before seen in the Texas community.
The first few stores opened in Houston, but it was evident that Hispanics were arriving each and every day and to many other cities. That’s why La Michoacana Meat Market™ started to expand on size, variety of products and services. Walk into any one of our La Michoacana locations and you will find a Taqueria, Produce Department, Grocery Department, Bakery Department, Floral Department, and last but not least, our Meat Department which distinguishes our brand with authentic marinated fajitas.
As of today, we are headquartered in Spring Branch Houston Texas where our corporate staff provides administration support services to 210 stores. Since 1986, the company has grown to over 8,000 employees. In addition to the operations of La Michoacana store locations, we also include the El Ahorro Supermarkets, Sellers Bros. Supermarkets and, most recently acquired, Arlan’s Markets. The majority of the stores are spread throughout Texas including locations in Houston, Dallas, Austin and San Antonio; but you will also find us in many small cities where Hispanics are working hard like Corpus Christi, Lufkin, Bryan and Valley of Texas. We also operate 5 locations in the state of Oklahoma.
We will never forget our origins… nor that our main focus is meats! Fresh, juicy and prepared just how our customers like it.
Today we give thanks to our customers, to all our family members, to our employees, vendors and to this great country, who has allowed us to be the biggest chain of Hispanic American supermarket in the United States.
